Transforming Mental Health and Strengthening Suicide Prevention

9 January, 2017

The Prime Minister made important announcements about transforming mental health and strengthening suicide prevention today. (Listen here at 1:19:45)
These inlcude:

  • new support for schools with every secondary school being offered mental health first aid training and new trials to strenthen the link between schools and local NHS services
  • a Green Paper on children and young people's mental health to transform services in schools, universities and for families
  • a partnership with employers to improve mental health in the workplace led by Lord Stevenson and Paul Farmer
  •  a £247m investment in mental health liaison services to support A&E casualty units in assessment, counselling and support
  • an expectation that local authorities will develop and implement stronger, effective, multi-agency suicide prevention plans by the end of 2017
  • an increased focus on ensuring that those that have recently been bereaved by suicide receive information and follow-up support to help them cope with their loss

These are just some of the encouraging announcements today……
We welcome these new initiatives and hope that they will result in all schools, colleges, universities and workplaces taking a whole organisation approach to wellbeing and mental health. This is based on the fact that we all have wellbeing and mental health and need to understand its importance and how to look after it. We also need to have the confidence to ask for help and be confident that the right support will be available quickly.
