The Health Select Committee Inquiry issued its Final Report in March 2017 and here is a summary of its findings:
- The government needs to develop a clear implementation plan for its 2012 Suicide Prevention Strategy, underpinned by external scrutiny services for people at risk need to be improved including those bereaved or affected by suicide
- Professionals need better training to avoid confidentiality acting as a barrier to involving families in a patient's assessment, treatment and receovery
- Data on suicide needs to be more timely and consistent
- Media guidelines on reporting suicide need to be followed… and action should be taken when breaches are made to avoid recurrence
